The FJMC allocates federal funding for fisheries research and monitoring in the ISR. Priorities come from the communities.

How priorities are set
Each June the committee visits three ISR communities to hear from their HTCs. In September or October it meets the HTC Presidents. What it hears becomes the annual research priority list, which is shared with DFO and other researchers so they can propose work that answers it.
Short proposals are reviewed at the January meeting in Winnipeg, and the final funding decisions are made in April. The meeting cycle

Imaryuk Monitors
The all-weather highway between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk opened on 15 November 2017 and brought road access to remote lakes. Before it opened, the Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk HTCs wrote a Community Fishing Plan so that new access would not harm fish stocks and habitat along the highway and at Imaryuk (Husky Lakes).
Imaryuk Monitors promote and monitor the fishing restrictions in that plan, and help assess fish stocks and habitat in the area. Look for their badge and uniform, and ask them for information.

Youth opportunities
The FJMC sometimes offers a summer job to youth interested in fish and marine mammals: office work with Joint Secretariat staff in Inuvik and field experience in research and monitoring programs. Preference is given to Inuvialuit candidates. Contact our staff to ask whether a position is open.
